Shrink wrap is a quite versatile packaging option that can be used for bundling, labelling, weatherproofing, tamper-proofing, and many more. Furthermore, shrink wrap is quite easy to use, no matter what the size of the packaging is.

Shrink wrap or shrink film is a polymer film that shrinks while heated. Shrink wraps can be made from various types of polymers and each has its own advantages. However, when it comes to using them, the procedure is more or less similar. When exposed to a heat source, either by using heated air or a heat gun, the film shrinks quickly. This occurs because of the molecular structure of the film. The molecules of the film, when in the form of a roll, do not have any specific alignment.

However, while heated, the molecules rapidly align themselves in a particular pattern and shrink in size. It makes the film take up the shape of the mold of the product it is wrapping. Shrink film is useful for wrapping almost any item, either in a form of primary packaging or secondary packaging. This provides a durable protective barrier. Shrink wraps are usually clear, but they can also be made opaque while manufacturing. These have printable surfaces.

Types of shrink wrap

Shrink wrap comes in several types, let us know about them in brief.

PVC

PVC or polyvinyl chloride is one of the frequently used shrink film variants. It is lightweight, clear, and inexpensive. But, PVC also has certain issues which is why it has provided a way to the other two variants. Because PVC contains carbon and chloride, it releases a strong odor while heated. Thus, it is recommended that manufacturers use it while in open, well-ventilated spaces. Moreover, in some parts, the use of PVC shrink wrap is restricted.

POF

POF or Polyolefin is a premium choice. It has replaced PVC in the scenario of the packaging of edible products. The cross-linked POF films contain high tensile strength and are very durable. Because of their durability, large rolls having low thicknesses are simple to manufacture. Moreover, it also comes with excellent puncture resistance. POF can also be fully recycled.

PE

PE or Polyethylene itself is available in three variants: HDPE or High-Density PE, LDPE or Low-Density PE, and LLDPE, which stands for Linear Low-Density PE.

Shrink wrap can be used for several purposes they are bundling and shipping, tamper-proofing, product and packaging lamination, labeling, and protection from wear and tear.

Advantages

  • Protection: Shrink wrap provides decent surface protection at an economical cost. For products having sharp edges, cross-linked films do better. Moreover, for perishable products, shrink wraps enhance their shelf life, thanks to their barrier properties.
  • Improved aesthetics: Shrink wraps are mostly used for labeling since they can easily take the shape of the product they are wrapping. Hence, it is very common in the beverage industry to use shrink-wrap labeling.
  • Sustainable: Shrink wraps manufactured from PE and POF are recyclable. Hence, they are rapidly replacing PVC wraps.
  • Low cost: Shrink wrap provides the protection and aesthetics of premium packaging options at a lot of economical costs. They can wrap heavy or light products, they can safeguard food products and boost their shelf life, and can be used for bundling without any use of trays or other rigid packaging options.

How to use shrink wraps?

For small-sized products, using shrink wraps could be quite basic. All you require is an impulse sealer and a heat gun. For occasional use, even a hairdryer and a pair of scissors will work.

First, you have to cut the film depending on the size of the item you are wrapping. Post, completely wrapping the item, there must be enough shrink film left that could be fused together by the impulse sealer. Put the open side of the wrap in the impulse sealer and seal the shrink wrap. Sealers having cutters will automatically trim away the excess material. Having the product inside the wrap, use the heat gun to shrink the film down. Use the heat gun from a distance so that the shrinking happens evenly.

Shrink wrap is an economical, versatile, and sustainable packaging choice that several businesses, small and large, have adopted. Shrink wraps can be an excellent option for manufacturers who are looking ahead for reducing the amount of plastic in packaging. They provide great barrier properties, offer decent levels of surface protection, and can be recycled.
